When do you need Degree Attestation, DFAT Legalisation (Apostille & Authentication) and Degree Notarisation?
Some overseas authorities require educational documents to be legalised by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) before the documents can be accepted by the authorities. DFAT legalises educational documents by issuing either an Apostille or an Authentication certificate on the document.
Apostilles are used for countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention*.
Authentication certificates are used for countries that are not signatories to the Hague Convention*.
DFAT can legalise two sorts of educational documents:
Original documents: Permitted only if (a) the original educational documents are verified by the education provider, and (b) a verification record is also supplied by the education provider.
Notarised documents: DFAT can legalise all notarised educational documents sealed with a Notarial Certificate without any further verification by the education provider.
For non-Hague Convention countries, DFAT authenticated documents must then be attested by the relevant Embassy or Consulate in Australia.
* The Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents (HCCH 1961 Apostille Convention).
